SRFD Firefighter Recognized at Banana Ball Game

By

Banana Ball has become famous as the most entertaining game in sports, turning the traditional game of baseball into an entertaining, fast-paced spectacle that keeps both its players and the audience engaged.

On March 28 and 29, Banana Ball made its way to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The Texas Tailgaters and the Firefighters battled against each other at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in front of sold-out crowds. Bringing chaos and excitement, each team added their own unique twists to the game, reminding us that you can never have too much fun playing baseball.

As part of the opening ceremony on the second day, the Firefighters requested a fire engine, adding visuals and paying tribute to the fire service. The ceremony featured Salt River Fire Engine LT293 in center field. As the game progressed, the third inning held great significance for the Salt River Fire Department as the Firefighters team honored Joseph Christopher as the “Firefighter of the Night.”

Unfortunately, Christopher was unable to attend the game as planned due to health-related issues with his cancer treatment. His girlfriend, Julienne, and their three kids stood at home plate in his honor as the crowd roared in applause with a standing ovation recognizing his service.

During the tribute, it was noted that Christopher has been with the SRFD for six years, and his goal is to overcome his diagnosis and return to work, continuing to serve the Community.

The game concluded with the Firefighters coming out on top, splitting the two-game series with the Tailgaters.
