The Rez Stands Still for Third Consecutive Year

By
Learn how Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community artists Dominic Martinez, Raeann Brown, Dwayne Manuel and Seneca Silverhorn, known as Woodenhead Collective, turned the SRPMIC Community Building into the ‘Marketplace of Madness’ for their annual ‘Day the Rez Stood Still 3’ event.

To quote a line from the movie “Jaws,” the team over at Woodenhead Collective is “going to need a bigger boat” for next year’s horror festival, as this year’s drew hundreds of horror fanatics inside the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Building.

Woodenhead Collective is composed of Dominic Martinez, Raeann Brown, Dwayne Manuel and Seneca Silverhorn. Since 2022, they’ve hosted the frightfully fun horror-themed “The Day the Rez Stood Still” arts festival here in the Community, to the delight of many.

On Sept. 27, the group hosted the third annual free event, which saw record attendance. Though the costumes looked terrifyingly real, it was a family-friendly event for all to enjoy.

Getting its name from the popular 1951 science-fiction film “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” directed by Robert Wise, which is based on the 1940 short story “Farewell to the Master” by Harry Bates, the event featured a laundry list of horror businesses and artists from the Community and around the Valley such as Tiffany Enos Designs, Millie’s Creations, Cult Creep and more.

This year’s event allowed for many artists to showcase their talents, network with local artists, as well as collaborate with others on upcoming spooky and horror-themed events and projects held throughout the state.

Additionally, the team from the Scaredycast podcast attended in person and assisted Woodenhead Collective with announcing various prize winners and special guests throughout the day. Scaredycast is an Arizona-based podcast hosted by Kelsey Dickerson, Tony Gautier and Brian Young. The trio focuses on the paranormal, creepy, strange and weird things that go bump in the night.

The SRPMIC Library team was also in attendance and featured a Halloween arts and crafts station for the children.

Arizona cosplay artists dressed as Art the Clown from “Terrifier,” Jason from “Friday the 13th,” “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” characters, Leatherface from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “The Babadook” and many more happily posed for photos with families at the official photo booth.

Fat Dog Foodz sold Sonoran hot dogs and other delicious goodies to customers in a lengthy line. The line was also long for delicious drinks sold by Dank Drank Lemonade.

The “spooktacular” event concluded with a “Monster March” at 5:30 p.m., in which those who dressed up as their favorite characters marched inside the Community building.

Celebrating its third year, Woodenhead Collective’s event proved that the SRPMIC is at the forefront of Arizona’s local horror scene.
