Masked Memories: Seniors Enjoy a Night of Entertainment at the Senior Masquerade Homecoming Dance

By Andreea Miguel

Where elegance meets enigma, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Senior Services staff hosted a night filled with laughter, music and dancing for seniors on September 6 in the Talking Stick Ballroom at Talking Stick Resort and Casino.

The Senior Masquerade Homecoming Dance allowed guests to dress their best, with a mystical twist. As guests were welcomed into the room, each was given either a crown or a tiara. They were seated at tables decorated with beautiful gold dinner service and a yearbook full of fun pictures of guests at other Senior Services events.

Event attendee Kasheen Walker had nothing but praise for the Senior Services staff, emphasizing the level of inclusivity throughout the entirety of the event. “If you didn’t bring one, they provided a mask for you, and each plate had a different unique mask [design],” said Walker. “It was beautiful, and the DJ was playing a lot of old-school jams,” she added, laughing.

Not only did Walker praise the Senior Services staff, she also wanted to acknowledge the Talking Stick Resort and Casino staff for assisting her grandmother when needed.

As the night progressed, so did the celebration. Photo booths were set up for guests to capture special moments. Pens were also provided for an opportunity to bring back the nostalgic yearbook-signing ritual.

“The event was a huge success,” said Jon Newman, Senior Services manager. “We received several comments of appreciation on our social media pages, as well as words of appreciation during the event.”

In addition to the monthly senior breakfasts, which allow seniors to stay informed by inviting various vendors and guest speakers, the Masquerade Homecoming dance was the perfect opportunity for seniors around the Community to have a chance to socialize with other seniors, especially those they have not been able to see in a while.

Senior Services already has begun planning the celebrations for its upcoming holiday events, which are just around the corner.
