The Salt River Fire Department celebrated a huge milestone in the construction of Fire Station 295. The new station is located at 92nd Street and McKellips Road and is set to open next summer.

On Friday, Aug. 7, a topping-out ceremony was held to signify the placement of the highest beam in the construction process. Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Council members, dignitaries and those who have collaborated on the project attended.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Mink gave opening remarks.

“Today’s ceremony marks another significant milestone in this project that has been years in the making. It reflects our Community’s continued investment in public safety, its firefighters and the future amongst the services here within the Community,” said Mink.

During his remarks, Mink pointed out a wall on the south end of the building especially for guests and those who have helped in the process of building the station. Guests had the opportunity to use the wall to write heartfelt messages to the future firefighters who will work in the station, serving the Community.

“This wall will permanently recognize those who helped make this project possible and represent the partnership, dedication and craftmanship required to transform an idea into facilities that will serve for generations,” Mink explained.

Council member Cheryl Doka provided some remarks about the project.

“Projects don’t just happen because of one team; they happen because of the many who are working toward a common goal,” said Doka. “Today’s ceremony is about recognizing the people behind these projects …. We appreciate the effort each person has contributed, and we are proud of what we accomplished together.”

The 94,538-square-foot campus will provide the SRFD with a modern facility that is designed to support emergency response, provide firefighter wellness and host ongoing training for years to come.

And now that the top beam is in place, the construction process will transition to the next phase, which includes roof installation, interior walls, windows, mechanical and fire protection systems, and interior finishes. 

Andrew Michel spoke on behalf of Perlman Architects, which handled project design. He explained that, when combined, Station 295 and the Resource Building next door will handle emergency response, command, special operations, fire prevention, logistics, maintenance and long-term readiness in one location. 

“This facility represents one of the most significant investments in the public safety infrastructure in the history of the Salt River Fire Department,” said Michel.

“It is designed to improve emergency response, protect our members, preserve Community assets, strengthen readiness and position this department’s immediate needs of the Salt River Community.”

After the ceremony, guests took guided tours through the construction site. Markers were available for those who wanted to sign and write messages on the designated wall on the south side of the building.
