January 31, 2025Gifts of Gourds and Knowledge
The Teen Wolf Group from Youth Services brought a delightful surprise to the seniors from Senior Services in the Way of Life Facility.
As members of the Teen Wolf Group pulled a cart, the 43 boxes of hand-painted gourds it carried immediately caught the attention of the seniors.
Before the December 19 gift exchange, the seniors and youth introduced themselves, sharing family names as the seniors nodded in familiarity. The elders, rich in life experiences, shared their wisdom and life lessons with the youth.
“Don’t forget where you come from,” one senior said. “Don’t be afraid to learn your language or the history of our people. Continue your education and learn about your roots–and don’t forget to treat your parents well too.”
Another senior added, “Make sure to live your life, because life is too short.”
One by one, the youth presented their handmade creations to the seniors. Each ornament was a unique piece of art, decorated with Christmas themes, animated characters and traditional designs. The gourds were a collaborative effort between the Quail (ages 5-7 years old), Jr. Teen Wolf (ages 12-13 years old), and Teen Wolf programs (ages 13-18 years old).
“I hope all the Teen Wolf participants heard the elders’ advice and take it to heart,” said Youth Development Specialist Lauren Scabby. “Remember to check in on your elders and visit them.”
The seniors admired the ornaments, amazed at the youth’s creativity. In return, the youth left not only with the wisdom of their elders but also with a Toby Tootles plushie as a token of appreciation.
