Seniors Celebrate Holiday Season

By

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community seniors were honored on Dec. 11 with a classic Christmas dinner and dance. The event was hosted by Senior Services at the Talking Stick Resort Grand Ballroom. The evening was filled with fun and cheer.

Caring for our elders is an important part of O’odham teachings. Emcee and Council member Jacob Butler shared a few words about his appreciation for our most experienced relatives.

“So, tonight, I wasn’t sweating at all, and then I got up here and beads of sweat just started pouring down [my face]. I think it’s because I don’t want to let you down. I have a lot of respect for you, and I hope I do service to your dinner,” said Butler.

The night included dinner, raffle drawings, live vaila music by Gertie and the T.O. Boyz, and a visit from Santa. Seniors spent the night dancing with twists and turns to Gertie’s top hits. Senior Services raffled off about 45 items presented in holiday wrapping paper. For dinner, guests were served steak with sides and a dessert.

Throughout the night, guests had the opportunity to check out the photo booth. The booth included different props for guests to take pictures with, and Santa would stop by, if requested. The night concluded with a thank-you. Smiles could be seen throughout the ballroom.
