May 16, 2025Jason Largo Becomes Certified Arborist
On March 31, Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community member and Public Works Road Landscape Maintenance worker Jason Lago became an arborist.
An arborist is a certified specialist who obtains advanced knowledge for tree care that includes maintenance to tree biology and safety when it comes to removing trees, along with other practices.
“Trees are a necessity to daily life, so it is important to take care of them properly,” said Largo. “I will be able to use some of the knowledge I learned and apply it in the field.”
Three years of experience in tree care and an application to become a certified arborist are required to take a 200-question test in three and a half hours. “It’s not super difficult, but one would definitely need to study,” Largo explained.
After a certificate is issued, Largo has three years before he must reapply and take the 200-question test once again to obtain his certification.
An arborist certification will help Largo as he works with the Roads and Maintenance crew as they clear paths by cutting weeds, shrubs and trees. Whether its trimming or cutting down trees along the roads or sidewalks, Largo is ready to do his part.
“I would like to thank my supervisors [and] managers Jay-Dean Dallas, Jennifer Jack, Mike Byrd and SRPMIC for giving us opportunities like this.”
